Move In Day and Visiting Temporary Work Site

Kira moved in yesterday, and while I would love to show the photos of her new place, they are going to have to wait one more day, because the photos Kira sent will not download yet. I will explain more about the apartment tomorrow, but I do have permission to share a story of her first night there. Kira, I may not get all the specifics correct, so forgive me.

The laundry room is on the 2nd floor of her building, and since she bought towels and such earlier in the day, she wanted to launder them first.  After Anthony left for his hotel, she headed downstairs to put them in the machine.  She came back upstairs to continue working on her room, and around 10:30 p.m. or so, she got back in the elevator to head down to put them in the dryer.  She was on the elevator with a young adult male,  and he watched as she pressed the button for the 2nd floor, only to have it not stop there.  He kept saying "you'll get it" over and over again, and she had no idea why he was saying that, when he could have said "hey, the reason you can't go to the 2nd floor is because the laundry room is closed."  She got off the elevator in the first floor lobby.  Still not knowing the laundry room was closed, she decided to try to access it through the stairwell, only the door she opened was the emergency exit only door, which set off the very loud alarm.  Not wanting to return to the scene of her crime, she ran up the stairs to another floor, and took the elevator back to what she hoped would be the 2nd floor, but again, it would not stop there, so she ended up in the lobby.....again. The security guard pretty much had her figured out by that time, and asked if she had laundry in the wash.  When she nodded an affirmative, he kindly said "it is closed, and you will need to get up early tomorrow morning, and head down there to retrieve it."  When she got back upstairs, she told her roommate that the laundry was closed, and he casually remarked "oh yeah, they close at odd times."  This might have been helpful information BEFORE she took her bag downstairs in the first place.  Welcome to apartment living in NYC, where apparently everything is learned through trial and error.

Other than moving in and meeting new roommates,  (she met three---still needs to meet the elusive fourth), she and Anthony went to a local Target so she could buy the towels and other essentials, and they rode the bus.  She said it was fine, but she prefers the subway because the bus stops too often.  They also decided to do a test run to the temporary office she will be working out of for the month of August.  The company she will work for is having their permanent offices renovated, and have had to rent out office space in another building.  Lucky for them, that building is in beautiful Chelsea, where the high line is.  This was another place I did not get to visit when we were there during that Spring Break, because a lot of it was covered in snow.  Kira walked a bit of it when she and her friends were there earlier this year, but it was not near as beautiful as it is now.  There are food vendors all around and there is a place where you can sit and eat or visit.  It will make for a great place to have lunch.

This is where she will be working

                                                               Info about the High Line

There is plexi-glass below the bridge, so you can look through, but not fall to your death.  Imagine if  you were involved in a fender bender on that road.  Those are a lot of witnesses.
This looks like a postcard.  So pretty!!!

Nice view from the High Line

Other than figuring out logistics with apartment, subway, work locations, etc., these two have been eating pretty well.  There are two great soul food restaurants in Harlem, and they made sure they ate at both.  I have not had a chance to ask who makes the best fried chicken, but both look amazingly good.  I did ask if those grits at Sylvia's tasted as good as they looked, and Kira disappointingly stated that they did not have enough seasoning.  People, you HAVE TO SEASON THE GRITS!!!!  Either that, or just put a bunch of cheese in there, because good cheddar has its own salty greatness.

I wasn't even there, but am going to declare Amy Ruth's as the best fried chicken.  She was from Alabama after all.  She just needs some of that delicious white sauce to go with it.

I love that President Obama definitely knew how to use that hot sauce.  Sylvia's bottles their own.

Anthony did some exploring himself earlier in the day, and said that Central Harlem is really great, and is only two subway stops from Kira's apartment.

Anthony has one more sleep before he leaves our kid and returns home, and while I know it is going to be torture to do that, he definitely feels confident in her ability to handle herself, and that makes me happy.
