Sunrise, Sunset

No, I am not about to break into the song from Fiddler On The Roof, although I did hum it as I was typing the title. I actually wanted to acknowledge that I got up for a sunrise!!  If you take photos of sunrises, you know that you have to take about 10 in progression to get just the right one, and that if there is the absence of clouds, you will lose some beauty, although at my age, every sunrise is beautiful. Orange Beach is beautiful at sunrise, and while the beach side is the most photographed, I love the bayside as well, and we get a glimpse of that when we stay at the Perdido.

After viewing the sunrise, I got back into bed for more sleep, but then got up and got dressed to head out and do some exploring. I drove down to the end of the road in Gulf Shores, which I like to do from time to time so I can see what has been added, what has been taken away, and what has had a name change. I also like to look at all the rental houses we can never afford to rent because the rent is outrageous, and I try to see if I can maintain the 35 mph speed limit along that stretch of road. There were lots of those electronic measuring tools to let me know how I was doing, and  the first one I passed just said “too fast.” Not looking for a ticket while I am down here, so I slowed down.

On my way back, I stopped at the state pier, paid my $3 admission fee and began my slow walk down to the end. I saw dolphins right away, which meant I stopped to watch. They were pretty lazy this afternoon, so I did not get to see any frolicking but they are my faves and always make me smile. I saw plenty of pelicans, and I have decided that they are my spirit bird. I first began my admiration of them from watching Petey on Flipper, but it grew exponentially when I observed them in Bradenton Beach several years ago. I think they must live by the motto “work smarter not harder,” because I watched them gather around fishermen who were trying to catch fish from a pier there. They would wait until the humans caught something and then they would either take the fish from the human or get it when it was about to be thrown back in the water. Once in Fairhope, we heard a young boy yell out that a pelican stole his fish. I thought it was hilarious and ingenious. Let the humans do it for you.

I stayed on the pier for awhile because it was breezy and quiet. People who fish don’t like a lot of noise and since I can relate to that, they are my favorite people to hang out around. Yes, it is smelly and hot, and you to have dodge fish hooks and bait, but the quiet makes it all worth it.  From the pier, I took a photo of the new lodge, which is a Hilton, and I love it. It is not imposing or gaudy and looks like a great natural addition to the state park area.

After leaving the pier, I headed to find what my mother swears is the best cookie ever. Cobalt is a wonderful restaurant and a sister to Cosmos, so I already know that their cookies must be fantastic. I had never purchased a delicacy from the bakery case because I was usually too full from the food to do so, but this trip was just for the cookie. There are no words to describe how amazing this cookie was. It was a chocolate coconut crunch cookie, and it was everything. My mother was 100% correct. Next time, I will get more than one, because one just was not enough.

After a light lunch and some more balcony reading, Anthony returned from his conference to get ready for 80s Night. I am not going to even tell you who he is dressed, as I am sure you can figure it out.

While he was kicking it with his fellow conference attendees, I headed to the beach to finally get some beach time and to enjoy the sunset. I sat there and read until it was too dark to do so, and then just sat and enjoyed the breeze. The flashlight toting crab hunters arrived, and I decided it was time to call it a night, and leave it to them.
